Think about the events so far that we have seen Scout observe. Pay close attention to her thoughts about Jem's actions particularly. Also, consider how the story is told and how Scout seems to be learning "the ways of the world" as the novel progresses.
This will be included in topics we will cover in class at the end of this week leading into next week.
Happy reading!

hi.
The name Scout, more than just being a name, also reflects the role of this character in the novel. Scout is often discarded by her brother and Dill and is forced to observe and find things out for herself. So far throughout the book, Scout has proven to be very inquisitive. She asks questions to anyone who will listen so she can find out more, especially about Boo Radley. I think she was given his name strategically because of her love for observing and evaluating and asking questions.
The name "Scout" is deffinately more that just a nick name, and most likely Harper Lee gave Jean Louise Finch this nick name for a reason. Nothing, no talk, no comments, and no questions, escape Scouts grasp if she is within ear shot. She always takes the time to analyze questions and comments, in order to possibly find out if they have an even deeper meaning. When Scout is left to her own resources by Jem and Dill she always manages to find a way to entertain herself by thinking about and questioning the happenings at the Radley house. Scout is especially interested in Boo Radley, and she finds herself spending most of her time imagining what happens inside the perimiter of the Radley house. Scout's inquisitive nature lends itself perfectly to this nick name, and I believe that Lee considered this when characterizing Scout and creating this nickname for her.
The nickname Scout is perfect for the character Scout in "To Kill a Mocking Bird". The definitions of scout talk a lot about the gathering of information in gossipy and military ways. Scout does both of these things. Scout loves any gossip stories about Boo Radley. She listens to what anyone says and tries to draw concluisions from the information that she has. Also, she asks question to herself and others about what is going on in the Radly place. Scout also gather information military style by listening to her commanding officer Jem. Jem always is the one who has the plans and starts the Radly conversations. He is the one that has her watch for Atticus when he goes back for his pants and also tells Scout about the way he found the pants. Jem also is the one who wants to give Boo Radly the note and get him outside. Without Jem's influence, Scout wouldn't be as good of a Scout.
In TKaM, Scout is her nickname. She shows this when she asks Atticus and Ms.Maudie questions. She compares the answers of them and also compares it to what she learns from Jem and personal experiences. A scout also could recruit people for their side. When Scout started talking with Ms. Maudie she erning her trust and could possibly use that trust later on in the book.
P.S. My mom reached level 46 on the free rice website.
The nickname "Scout" is more than just a nickname. When Scout Jem and Dill are playing games in Boo Radley's yard, she is always the lookout or the spy. Also she is always talking to people around the neighborhood and scouting out any new gossip that there is about Boo.
"Scout," has way more of a meaning than the obvious. The word scout is derived from many words. One is a french word, escouter, "to listen, heed." Scout is always observing what is happeneing around her. She doesn't want to start trouble or go against Atticus, so she is always listening to learn different parts of the legend of Boo Radley. She listens to her neighboors, and the town gossipers. She even listens to Jem and goes with some of his crazy plans. She helps Jem, even through the sticky situations he gets himself into. I think that later in the book, Scout, may be considered a "Scout" to Atticus, either if she is viewing the trial, being questioned, or helps Atticus. I think she kind of likes being a detective, but she doesn't really like to be wrong so she has a very good strategy of not being to pushy to get information out of people, but let them speak, and hear what comes out.
Miss Holmes! I think this blog idea is so awesome! I might even make one myself, like a Drama Blog! My friend has a blog, check it out. http://coffeeisntmycupoftea.blog.com/
here are some more words that scout was derived from: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=scout&searchmode=none
Thanks!!
The name "Scout" definitlely applies to the definition meaning spy. Scout and Jem are very interested in the life and goings on of Boo Radley, and when Jem and Dill try to put a note in the Radley window, Scout is made the lookout to make sure no one catches them. Scout Finch also fits the definition of gossip. She and Jem try to find out as much information as possible about Boo but most of it isn't anything more than urban myths.
Jean Marie Finch is nicknamed Scout in the book, "To Kill a Mockingbird". Scout lives up to the literal meaning of her namesake in different ways. For example, Scout spies on Boo Radley in order to get information or gossip about him. Scout also questions Miss Maudie about Boo Radley because her father, Atticus does not believe she should be asking such questions. She acts as a scout when she agrees to send Boo Radley a note through his window with Dill and Jem also. Scout's name fits her pefectly because she is exactly what defines her name!
P.S. Miss Holmes I love this blog idea! Will you still accept this for extra credit even though it's Monday?
I think that when Harper Lee nicknamed Jean Louise Finch to be Scout she meant it to be meanignful to the readers. Dill and Jem would always exclude Scout from much of what they did together, especially when it came to Boo Radley, so Scout had to find things out for herself. She would look for gossip and information about Boo Radley everywhere. She asked Miss Maudie and Atticus if they knew anything about Boo. Scout would do the crazy things Jem and Dill came up with, just to find information about Boo Radley. This nickname was meant to show how intrigued Scout can get when it comes to asking questions and learning knew things.
Miss Holmes I love you!!!!!
HMMMMM lets see the name scout is ironic in the novel To Kill A Mocking bird. It is ironic because like a scout, scout, uses her mads skills in everything to try to unlock mysteries about the Radley home. She knows of the mysteries and thinks a lot about them. I also have a hunch that although it is not in the book she is in fact a girl scout.
I think the word "scout" can have a number of meanings. In "To Kill A Mockingbird", Scout is characterized by her name. She is always hunting for something and snooping around to find answers to the smallest questions. Scout's curiousity may be slightly misunderstood by adults and especially by her brother, Jem. Jem and their neighbor, Dill, consistantly disregard Scout. This frustrates Scout because she believes that to every question there is an answer, however, in Boo Radley's case, there may not be one specific answer. The nickname is perfect for Scout because she is quite anxious to have the knowledge the adults surrounding her have.
Scout isn't just a name for the character in the novel, it is also a way to explain the role she plays. She is always intrested in the events that surround Boo and can usually find out more. She is also very sensitive to how others react to things, always questioning the norm, evaluating other peoples' actions. This name could prove to be given to her on purpose by Harper Lee.
Hello.....
You do have an interesting point on how "Scout" is more than just a nickname. I didnt think that there was going to be so much sybolism I thought about the real definition of the word scout...a watcher/observer......i think that this has to do with the fact that she is so interested by Boo Radley and tries to find more about him and atempts to ask as many questions to people to whoever will listen to her.

Scout relates to these definitions because she is a leader and always up for adventure. She likes exploring and spying on Boo.
The nickname Scout is perfect for the main character in "To Kill A Mockingbird".I think Harper Lee strategically named her to show her love for gossip and new information. She is always on a mission to gather facts about the Radleys or anyone in the neighborhood. Even more then Jem, Scout always wants to know whats happening the reasons behind it. She also acts like a scout in many situations. Oftern discarded by Jem and Dill, Scout is forced to aquire news through careful observations and eavesdropping. Jean Louise Finch earned her nickname from her inquisitive spirit and sly observations, I believe this was no mistake of Harper Lee.
When we started to read To Kill a Mockingbird, I never realized there might be a reason as to why Harper Lee nicknamed Jean Marie Finch, "Scout". Looking at the definitions of the word Scout, her character definitely fits the descriptions. She is searching for clues about Boo Radley, and receives gossip from Miss. Stephanie Crawford and Miss. Maudie about his strange ways. It is like Scout is a little detective, asking questions to accumulate more knowledge, so she can finally crack the case about Boo Radley.
a scout is a person that goes in head of every one else to examine what is to come. In the book she has been the one to find all the things that boo has done for them.
The name Scout is more than just her nickname. It probably has a hidden meaning. An example of a hidden meaning is that she always spys on Boo Radley so the name fits her well. They are always trying to figure stuff out about Boo by spying on him.
I think the definition of the word Scout really fits for Jean Louise. When they went to spy on Boo thats somthing a scout would do. She analizes alot of things and observes too. I think the auther purposely gave her this name. Since jem and Dill left her out she is left to find things out by herself. When she teams up with Dill and Jem she is the look out.
The definition of the word scout describes Scout's behavior and is a very suitable nickname for her. The way she hunts for answers, asks questions and is intrigued by adventure. Scout is the perfect name for Jean Louise.
The name Scout is more then just a name. She is always trying to to spy on Dill and Jem to find out what they're doing. She tries to find out more about herself and who she is. Chielf Holmes is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've come to conclusion that maybe Scout is called tha name becasue of the way she acts. She doesn't act like a normal girl would. She doesn't like to wear dresses or try to look pretty. She doesn't try to play like any of the other girls would and she does not play with other girls either. She is a very independent girl. She doesn't care what people think about her.She is kind of like her own leader.

I think that Scout is a perfect name for her character because, she always spies on Boo. I also think that she spies on Boo Radley, or "Arthur" to try and figure out why he is always left secluded in his house.
Well I don't really like to over analyze books, sometimes i think things are the way they are written just because, end of story. However if you were to look at Scout's you would find it a good fit because she is sneaky yet innocent and spies on other people, and Scout, Jem and Dill all try to spy on Boo Radley
The name Scout is more than just a nickname because it also defines many characteristics of the role of her character. Scout is vary adventurous and loves to hang out with her brother, Jem and friend, Dill. She always is thinking and asking many questions. Scout also is fascinated by Boo Radely. She loves imagining what life is like in the Radely house and wants to investigate. In conclusion, i think Scout is more than just a nickname.
